Last September, TNC’s team in New Jersey held a special event for donors with a dedicated paddle raise for projects in the Caribbean. The evening featured a Caribbean Sea turtle theme, with all guests walking a “green carpet” to enter and stopping to pose for a sea turtle photo opportunity. Attendees enjoyed a day of clay target shooting at a private club followed by cocktails and dinner

Kemit Sweeney, aquaculture specialist for TNC in the U.S. Virgin Islands, gave an overview of important work on Caribbean coral and ocean habitats that was followed by an entertaining video created by the New Jersey team, using the fun concept of a “turtle hall of fame.” The video highlighted the many environmental challenges that sea turtles, other wildlife and people face in the Caribbean. Nature was emphasized as an important part of the solution.

A professional auctioneer guided the paddle raise, which resulted in $90,000 in donations for Caribbean conservation initiatives in less than ten minutes. We extend special thanks to the donors and our colleagues in New Jersey for their partnership and support.

The Nature Conservancy in the Caribbean TNC's work in the Caribbean began in the Virgin Islands and, for over 40 years now, we’ve been restoring coral reefs, protecting beaches and safeguarding wildlife like sea turtles in this paradise of islands and sea.
