Announcing fire management efforts in the Ossipee Pine Barrens

It's that time again!🔥 🔥 🔥 Controlled burn season is upon us here in New Hampshire. Any time between now and the end of October, when the weather conditions and qualified crew available are right, we may be conducting controlled burns at our Ossipee Pine Barrens Preserve. We are planning to conduct these burns on approximately 200 acres in three separate locations: Two are along Plains Road (Route 41) in Madison and one is along Ossipee Lake Road in Freedom.

Controlled burns are an important forest management tool in the Ossipee Pine Barrens. They help accelerate the restoration of the unique and globally rare pitch pine-scrub oak habitat (a fire-dependent ecosystem), as well as reduce the risk of wildfire for the surrounding communities.

If you're in the area during a controlled burn, please be sure to drive slowly, obey signage and fire professionals, and plan to hike in a different part of the preserve. Safety for all is the most important part of this work!
