Africa’s forests face many threats, including shifting agricultural practices and unsustainable wood fuel extraction for the 80 percent of households in sub-Saharan Africa that rely on firewood or charcoal for cooking.
However, African countries have committed to the world’s most ambitious forest landscape restoration targets and TNC is committed to helping nations reach their goals.
We’re working with partners and applying science and technology to plant the right trees in the right places, including mangroves on Kenya’s North Coast and timber and fruit trees in western Tanzania’s Mahale ecosystem, home to the 93% of the country’s endangered chimpanzees.
